Blue Canyon Country Club, Canyon Course Description:
(site of Tiger Woods' 1998 Asian victory and host of 2007 Johnnie Walker)

The most well known of the Phuket golf courses and has been voted best course in Asia on no less than four occasions. Measuring over 7,000 yards off the back tees, it is well suited to tournament golf and has hosted the Johnny Walker three times in 1994, 1998 and 2007. Perhaps most famously in 1994 when Tiger Woods beat Ernie Els in a dramatic play off which first brought Blue Canyon international recognition.

The course itself winds its way through natural canyons and freshwater lakes and its well guarded Bermuda greens are normally the fastest on the island. The back nine has the more spectacular holes and two par three's, 14th and 17th are as hard as you will play. The 14th green is shaped as the country of Thailand and if the wind is blowing be prepared for a watery grave. Fred Couples described the 17th as the "best par 3 in golf" and can play anything from a 5 iron to a driver.

Blue Canyon has a superb clubhouse with an excellent restaurant and bar that overlooks the 18th green, not to mention the massage and spa in the Lodge for those who prefer all in resort type golf holiday.

Blue Canyon Country Club, Lakes Course Description:
(scenic and challenging course enjoyable by all)

The Lakes Course was established in 1999 and redesigned in 2006 and is now regarded by many as equally as good as it more well known neighbour. Similar in length to Blue Canyon, water comes into play on 17 holes but with 5 different tees to play from the Lakes can be enjoyed by golfers of any standard. During the renovation in 2006, cart paths were put in making this an attractive option for those golfers who prefer to ride rather than walk.

The first nine is played through freshwater lakes and old tin mine canyons and the back nine is played through the rubber trees finishing on what can only be described as the hardest 18th hole in Asia. A long par four, which even if you hit a great drive you are faced with nearly 200 yards uphill to a shallow green protected by a huge canyon.

The clubhouse is shared by the Canyon course and the 32 room Spa Lodge is wonderful play to stay for those golfers wanting two great courses in luxurious surroundings

Red Mountain Golf Club Description:
(Phuket's most exciting course; dramatic views and great golf)

Although its only been open under two years, Red Mountain has very quickly established its as one of, if not the best golf course Phuket. The designer Jon Morrow has made a wonderful job of the landscape with many elevated tees making it a wonderful inviting driving course. The terrain is very undulating and carts are compulsory as there are many steep climbs from greens to the tees. Many of the rock outcrops have been left just as they were in the Tin Mine era, which give the course a very unique character.

This is the highest course in Phuket and some of the views from various points of the golf course are breathtaking.

Take plenty of balls as there is hardly any rough, if you miss the fairway then its usually a lost ball so take advice from your caddy when to take a driver or an iron for safety, the premium around here is accuracy.

Every hole has character but the last three holes are as good as anywhere in the world. The 16th is a short par four which is nearly driveable but if you miss the green, it's a lost ball. Five iron off the tee into widest part of the fairway and a wedge on to the green and don't forget to check the scenery before you leave the green. The 17th is short par three is directly downhill with nearly a 400 feet drop. The ball is in the air forever and you can never be sure where its going land, so be sure to consult you caddy before you choose the club. The 18th is a wonderful scenic par 5 with red rocky outcrop on the left and a large lagoon in front of the green.

Before you complete the Red Mountain experience, shower in the most modern locker rooms and treat yourself to some of the best thai food in the clubhouse overlooking 18th green...its quite a view

Loch Palm Golf Club Description:
(a local long-time favorite for its unique, fun & fair design)

Loch Palm is probably the most popular course on Phuket and generally is in great condition since its recent refurbishment. The opening holes are played around Crystal Lake, a spectacular site measuring 48 acres in the centre of the golf course. The object of the first three holes is to stay well away from it as anything slightly right will end up in a watery grave. The first nine holes are fairly flat with water in play on most of the holes and second nine is very undulating with some dramatic elevation changes, with none more so than par 14th hole where a medium iron has struck perfectly to find the target over water 100 feet below the tee.

The par five 18th is a great finishing hole and has ruined many medal rounds. A genuine three shot par five, the fairway is only 18 yards wide at one point so a very accurate medium iron has be perfectly placed to leave you short iron in to well guarded green. The long hitters have to be very brave if they want to get on in two with out of bounds left and the lake on the right.

The clubhouse has recently been refurbished and should be fully functional by mid November 2010. A new hotel is also due to open shortly that will service guests for Loch Palm and its impressive neighbor, Red Mountain.

Laguna Phuket Golf Club (Banyan Tree) Description:
(tree lined parkland style Max Wexler course, host of Thailand Open)

Laguna is a beautiful parkland course that meanders its way through some of the most expensive hotels and real estate in Phuket. Voted as a Top Ten Resort Course by Asian Monthly magazine, this course is far better than what most people regard as a resort course. Although it is not particularly long by todays standard at 6,654 yards it was good enough to host the prestigious Thailand Open in 2009 and the Mercedes Benz Asian Tour Event in 2010.

The course itself is generally always well maintained and although there are no carts allowed here, it’s a relatively easy walk round amongst the scenic lagoons and the backdrop of the nearby mountains. The 17th hole is the signature hole which measures nearly 600 yards, playing over water twice and requires three very well struck shots to reach the green.

Six high quality hotels make up the resort of Laguna, so along with the driving range and 2,500 metre putting green there is everything here a golfer could want.

Phuket Country Club Description:
(island's oldest course; challenging and scenic)

The Phuket Country Club was the first Phuket golf course to built. Its original home was Surin Beach but the land was taken over by gypsies. Its new location in the heart of the island is perfect golf terrain surround by mountains and huge lake in the centre of the course. The signature hole is the 10th hole and goes around the lake measuring over 500 yards, but if you can carry the ball 240 yards you can play hole as a 90% right angle and drive the green in one.

The golf course does not allow carts but at 6,483 yards its not a very long course and is quite an easy walk. The course is quite wide open and not very punishing from the tee but it is well bunkered and has some very strong grain on the greens. The club has hosted the Thailand Ladies Masters and the Asian Senior Masters in 2006 and 2008.

The course is actually 27 holes but the other nine holes is really a separate course with a different clubhouse. Don't be fooled by the nine holes, its well worth playing and is the hardest nine holes of golf on the island.
