Evening guide to Phuket

When the sun goes down on the tropical island of Phuket, it comes to life with its vibrant night-time antics. With a tremendous range of restaurants and bars, there are plenty of venues to wine and dine in or party until dawn. Patong has the liveliest bars and clubs, and the best eateries are scattered over the whole island.

Restaurants

Restaurants are everywhere in Phuket, from Thai food stalls serving anything from papaya salads to deep-fried crickets to five-star restaurants specialising in fresh seafood dishes. The restaurants offer cuisines from all over the world including Italian, Mexican, Thai, Chinese and Indian, to name but a few.

Patong has a great assortment of tasty restaurants which offer top-quality food and service to match. For some superb Italian food, La Gritta has a sweeping view of Patong Bay and a good accompanying wine list while the Novotel restaurant boasts international and Thai dishes served on their outdoor terrace.

Kamala is home to another fine example of great cooking with the highly rated Rockfish Restaurant. The casual atmosphere provided by the friendly staff and the tasty food brought to you by an international chef put this eatery in the top seven restaurants in the whole country.

Bang Tao is a quiet area on the east coast of Phuket but hosts a range of great places to eat, including the Watermark Bar and Restaurant. With its alfresco dining area overlooking the luxurious yachts in the marina just metres away, this stunning restaurant also provides a good menu and free transport to and from the eatery.

Bars and pubs

Patong comes alive at night in the shape of neon lights, cheap alcohol and banging music pumped out into the streets from the overflowing bars that line it. Renowned for its crazy antics after sundown, Bangla Road is where most of the action can be seen, and often it has to be seen to be believed.

There are countless beer bars and go-go bars to choose from, all serving drinks at roughly the same prices and girls who are willing to leave the bar and accompany you for the night for a small fee. There are also a few cabaret shows and gay bars dotted amongst the screaming go-go bars, with ladyboys also making an appearance on this lively road.

As well as the noisy party places, there are pubs and bars that are designed for couples and families looking for some peace and quiet. Scruffy Murphy’s is popular as it sits on the busy Bangla Road; as well as good food and drinks, it also boasts an exuberant live band that is very impressive. Molly Malone’s is another good option on the beachfront area and serves hearty portions of international food either in the air-conditioned inside or in the fresh sea breeze outside.

Kata is much calmer and is popular with the Western expat crowd. The Anchor is a traditional pub that holds local pool competitions and offers cheap drinks and friendly service. Phuket bars.
